This supposed prophecy about Jesus and his character (being holy) is also based on the non-prophetic song of thanks sung by Moses and the Israelites upon escaping the Egyptians and safely crossing the Red Sea. This song praises G-d (again, it is NOT prophecy) – and has nothing to do with Jesus, his character or anything else about him. Sh’mot / Exodus 15:11 says “Who is like You among the powerful, O L-rd? Who is like You, powerful in the holy place? Too awesome for praises, performing wonders!” Now some Trinitarians may insist that Jesus is G-d, but Judaism and the Torah begs to disagree. Every single time G-d speaks in the Torah He speaks in the singular – one. Never does G-d speak as a “plurality” (e.g. a trinity or more). The fact that we are clearly told G-d is one (echad – D’varim / Deuteronomy 6:4) is only one way we know He is not a trinity – throughout the Jewish bible this important “oneness” and “alone.” “So said the L-rd. . . the ONE who formed you from the womb, “I (singular) am the L-rd . . .Who spread out the earth ALONE (לְבַדִּ֔י).” (Yeshayahu / Isaiah 44:24) and “singularity” is repeated over and over so the lesson is not missed. G-d is not a man (Bamidbar / Numbers 23:19). “But now see – it is I! I am the only One! There are no (other) gods with me!” (D’varim / Deuteronomy 32:39). Over and over and over again we are told that G-d is ONE, alone, by Himself – SINGULAR. Even the The New Encyclopedia Britannica knows this: "Neither the word Trinity, nor the explicit doctrine as such, appears in the New Testament, nor did Jesus and his followers intend to contradict the Shema in the Old Testament: 'Hear, O Israel: The L-rd our G-d is one (an only) L-rd' -- Deut. 6:4.” The Jews, having just crossed the Red Sea, never heard of Jesus. They were singing the praises of the one true G-d, the G-d who freed them from slavery. Sh’mot / Exodus 15:11 says “Who is like You among the powerful, O L-rd? Who is like You, powerful in the holy place? Too awesome for praises, performing wonders!” The word in Sh'mot / Exodus 15:11 is the noun בַּקֹּדֶשׁ, which means a holy place – not “holiness.” The word for holiness is קוֹדֶשׁ (kadosh). Because the word in Sh’mot / Exodus 15:11 is prefixed with the Hebrew letter בַּ / “bet” it is speaking of a holy place (in holiness), and not being holy (holiness). “Proof texts” (biblical passages used to “prove” that Jesus was the messiah from the T’nach) often translate Hebrew words in a way to make them “fit” Jesus. Thus one will find in most Christian translations that the word in Sh’mot / Exodus 15:11 will be rendered as “holiness” (so they can say – Jesus is holy as G-d is holy). The way to check to see if a proof text is accurate, even if one does not know Hebrew, is too look up that word in a biblical passage that is not perceived to be about Jesus. In this case take a look at Baimdbar / Numbers 28:7 in various Christian bibles. The word used in Sh’mot / Exodus 15:11 (translated as holiness by most) is found also in Bamidbar / Numbers 28:7. Here are how some Christian translations translate the exact same word there: Bamidbar / Numbers 28:7 “in the Holy Place” New Living Translation Sh’mot / Exodus 15:11 “in holiness” Bamidbar / Numbers 28:7 “in the holy place” King James Version Sh’mot / Exodus 15:11 “in holiness” Bamidbar / Numbers 28:7 “in the holy place” New American Standard Version Sh’mot / Exodus 15:11 “in holiness.” Misleading, don’t you think? Why would they translate the SAME word differently in those two passages? The translations in Bamidbar / Numbers 28:7 is more accurate -- and it is not a proof text! Ergo Sh’mot / Exodus 15:11 – the song praising G-d, is not speaking of His holiness, but rather the holiness of the place. Holiness pertains to the world around us. Consider various Hebrew words related to קדושה / k’dusha, holiness: קידושין / kiddushin (marriage), קידוש / Kiddush – the blessing over wine, שבת קודש / Shabbat Kodesh, -- the holy Sabbath. The words, all related to holiness, center on physical activities because according to Judaism, holiness comes through elevating the physical, not denying it. Let’s shift to the Christian bible where the “proofs” which are supposedly found that Sh’mot / Exodus 15:11 is fulfilled. The first one mentioned is Luke 1:35 where the angel is supposedly speaking to Mary and the angel is NOT speaking about Jesus. The angel is speaking of the “Holy Spirit” (part of the trinity, and again not biblical as there is only one G-d). The other passage supposedly fulfilling Sh’mot / Exodus 15:11 is Acts 4:27 -- a passage which calls Jesus a “holy servant” – not G-d. Many people in the T’nach (Jewish bible) are called holy – and none of them are G-d. Sh’mot / Exodus 15:11 is not referring to any holy people (but rather a place of holiness). Sh’mot / Exodus 19:6 calls the Jews a holy nation as does Sh’mot / Exodus 22:30. Simply being called holy is not a prophetic fulfillment – and Acts calling Jesus holy does not make this a prophetic fulfillment of the Jewish nation referring to a holy location. It is highly questionable that Jesus was holy by biblical standards. He broke far too many mitzvot (commandments) – although the missionaries will insist he was “perfect” and “without sin.” However, it is not necessary to prove Jesus holiness (or lack thereof) in debunking this supposed prophecy. Sh’mot / Exodus 15:11 isn’t a prophecy at all (it is part of the song thanking G-d for saving the Jews); Luke is referring to the “holy spirit” and not Jesus. Acts is referring to Jesus as a holy servant – and not G-d. Another non-prophecy in the list. So far 0 for the list maker.
