The real messiah will be a descendant of Kings David and Solomon. Per the Christian bible, Jesus was not. However, Shmuel 2 / 2 Samuel 7:12 is not a messianic prophecy. This is speaking of David’s son Solomon (read the next line and it becomes clear. "When your days are finished and you shall lie with your forefathers, then I will raise up your seed that shall proceed from your body after you, and I will establish his kingdom. He shall build a house for My name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever.” Shmuel 2 / 2 Samuel 7:12-13. This was Solomon who built the first Temple. G-d is saying to David that when he (David) dies Solomon will inherit. Solomon will built the Temple. David’s line will be established through Solomon’s descendants. . . Keep reading. Line 14. “I will be to him a father, and he shall be to Me a son; so that when he goes astray I will chasten him with the rod of men, and with the stripes of the sons of Adam.” Shmuel 2 / 2 Samuel 7:14. The passage does not say IF this son of David goes astray, but WHEN. Christian missionaries insist that Jesus was “without sin.” By their yardstick Shmuel 2 / 2 Samuel 7:12-14 cannot be about Jesus. When did Jesus “go astray”? What about the “proof text” given by the list maker to prove that Jesus was the offspring mentioned in Shmuel 2 / 2 Samuel 7:12? When did Jesus “go astray”? What about the “proof text” given by the list maker to prove that Jesus was the offspring mentioned in Shmuel 2 / 2 Samuel 7:12? Matthew 1:1 says “This is the genealogy of Jesus the Messiah the son of David, the son of Abraham.” Yet this list names Joseph as Jesus' father -- and most Christians believe Joseph was NOT Jesus' biological father, meaning this would not be the genealogy of Jesus. See Matthew 1:16 "and Jacob the father of Joseph, the husband of Mary, and Mary was the mother of Jesus who is called the Messiah." So Matthew is listing Joseph's lineage (supposedly) -- and if Joseph is not Jesus' biological father this list is immaterial. A tribal status (and thus the right to be a Davidic king) passes only if the mother is Jewish before she is pregnant, and if the biological father (meaning his sperm) impregnates her. It the "holy spirit" impregnated Mary then Jesus has no tribal status and is not eligible to be the messiah. Let's assume for the moment that this genealogy given by Matthew is that of Jesus. The claim that Jesus is eligible to be the messiah falls apart based on the lineage given by Matthew. Read lines 2-17 of Matthew 1. Matthew complete re-works the genealogies of the T’nach (Jewish bible) and distorts them. From Abraham to David the lineages given by Matthew aligns with the lineages in the T’nach. From Solomon forward Matthew changes things. First Matthew 1:17 claims are the 14 generations from David's son Solomon to the exile of Jeconiah. Matthew 17 lists:
Compare Matthew with Melachim I / 1 Kings 1 through Melachim II / 2 Kings 24. Then peruse Divrei Hayamim I / 1 Chronicles 3:10-17, and Divrei Hayamim II / II Chronicles Chapters 1-36. The T’nach records all of the father/son generations from David's son Solomon to Jeconiah and his exile. The list does not match the one given by Matthew 1:17. Here is the list from the T’nach:
Somehow Matthew skips five kings altogether:
Jehoiakim son of Josiah between Josiah and Jeconiah. Jehoiakim is the son of Josiah and the father of Jeconiah. Yet Matthew's genealogy skips from Josiah to his grandson Jeconiah. All in all from Solomon to Jeconiah and his exile are 18 generations of fathers and sons who were King of Judah – not the 14 claimed by Matthew. This is nearly 100 years’ worth of kings! The T’nach tells us that Jeconiah and all of his descendants are cut off from being kings of the Jews. See Yirmiyahu / Jeremiah 22:30 “So said the L-rd: Inscribe this man childless, a man who will not prosper in his days, for no man of his seed shall prosper, sitting on the throne of David or ruling anymore in Judah.” Matthew 1 includes Jeconiah and his heirs in Jesus (and Joseph’s) lineage – which thus removes them from any possibility of being a king (messiah) of the Jews. Missionaries go through all kinds of contortions to excuse away this major flaw -- they point to a descendant of Jeconiah who was a ruler (but they ignore that he was not a king). They even point to the Talmud which says that Jeconiah repented and G-d forgave him. Since when do missionaries accept the teachings of the Talmud? Isn't that more than slightly hypocritical? Also, if they accept that Jeconiah repented and was forgiven -- then how do they insist that blood sacrifices are necessary to be forgiven for sins? How do they explain that Jeconiah was forgiven without the atoning sacrifice of Jesus? Some use the excuse that "this is why Jesus had to be a virgin birth -- to avoid the sin and curse of Jeconiah" -- but then why given a lineage for Jesus through Joseph which includes Jeconiah? Perhaps, because somehow they knew that without a male lineage Jesus was disqualified to be a king (messiah)? This is such a tangled web of deceit and confusion! Perhaps this is why Paul said "command certain people not. . .to devote themselves to myths and endless genealogies. Such things promote controversial speculations." 1 Timothy 1:3-4. The Christian bible so messed up any possible claim by Jesus to the Jewish throne Paul says "just have faith, and don't try to figure out the mess that is the lineages in the Christian bible"! It gets even worse. The Christian bible says that Joseph was not Jesus’ biological father, thus these lineages are pointless (in Matthew), but Matthew made a huge mistake. The lineage he gave for Joseph would pass the "Curse on Jeconiah" (Yirmiyahu / Jeremiah 22:30), which says that none of King Jeconiah's descendants will occupy the seat of King David. The last list given by Matthew seems to be mostly fiction. Matthew says “ After the exile to Babylon:
Look at the third one in this list: Zerubbabel father of Abihud.
Lastly, having the correct lineage (which neither Joseph or Jesus had per Matthew 1) does not make a person "the messiah." Even today there are people alive who descend from Kings David and Solomon and yet the messiah has not yet come. Having the correct lineage is a requirement, but it is not the only one. There are many, many requirements for one to be proved to be the messiah -- and being a descendant of Kings Solomon and David is only one of them.
